Abstract
From the Anthropocene to the Technocene: Ethical-anthropological Perspectives from the “terra incognita”
By assuming a transcendental approach, my paper aims to suggest that “the essence of the Anthropocene is by no means anything anthropocenic”. That is to say, the Anthropocene represents a philosophical rather than a scientific question, because it essentially equates to a Weltanschauung or «a paradigm dressed as epoch» (§1). Given this assumption, I try to bring out the basic features of such a paradigm, namely: the osmotic fusion between techne and physis (§ 2); the problem of periodization (§ 3); the ontological equation between “being” and “being makeable” (§ 4); the anthropological metamorphosis of homo faber into homo materia/Bestand man (§ 4). The final outcome of these considerations is that this aspirant new (geological) epoch isn’t the «Age of Humans» or «Menschenzeit», rather the age of technology as «subject of history» and thus my re-definition of Anthropo-cene as Techno-cene.
- Premessa
Le pagine che seguono si propongono di impostare una «dissezione critica» dell’Antropocene in quanto «discorso»[1]. Di farne emergere, cioè, alcuni decisivi presupposti teorici e ideologici. Quelli atti, se non a dimostrare (pretesa incompatibile con la brevità di questo contributo), quantomeno a instillare l’idea che questo termine si presti a denotare ben altro e ben più rispetto a una “semplice” epoca geologica. Parafrasando una celeberrima affermazione heideggeriana, a nostro avviso «l’essenza dell’Antropocene non è nulla di antropocenico». Né di antropocentrico. E forse neppure di antropologico. Vale a dire, che esso, ove opportunamente posto in questione, si rivela tutt’altro rispetto a quella Age of Humans o Menschenzeit[2], vagheggiata dai suoi sostenitori più entusiasti ma meno avveduti. In questo senso, si potrebbe definire “trascendentale” la prospettiva qui assunta, nel senso che essa si focalizza sulle condizioni di possibilità – epistemiche, ontologiche, antropologiche – di qualcosa come l’Antropocene (ribadiamo: anzitutto in quanto “discorso”, oggetto concettuale piuttosto che ipotesi geologica), dedicando minore attenzione alle sue implicazioni e criticità “interne” (politiche, ecologiche…), sulle quali si concentrano invece la maggior parte delle disamine e delle analisi dedicate al tema.
Ciò premesso, ci preme sottolineare anche il fatto che le seguenti pagine rappresentano il resoconto sintetico e parziale di un percorso di ricerca pluriennale non ancora pervenuto alla propria conclusione. In esso la trattazione della questione antropocenica viene inserita nella più ampia cornice di un confronto con i temi della filosofia della tecnica, a loro volta declinati in chiave filosofico-antropologica. Culmine di un tale progetto nel suo complesso è l’elaborazione di una Filosofia della Tecnica al Nominativo (TECNOM), ovvero di una ipotesi di antropologia filosofica della tecnica retta dai concetti di Neoambientalità e Ferinizzazione (dell’essere umano). Pertanto, è alle tappe di detto percorso – sia quelle già compiute sia quelle che, sebbene ancora da compiere, risultano già impostate nella loro struttura portante – che queste pagine rinviano (e rinvieranno) quali proprie naturali integrazioni[3].
- Che cos’è l’Antropocene?
Risale all’esordio del nuovo millennio la proposta del chimico olandese Paul Jozef Crutzen, premio Nobel nel 1995, di utilizzare il termine “Antropocene” (Anthropocene) per attestare oggettivamente – ossia, geologicamente – la conclusione del cosiddetto Olocene ovvero la seconda epoca, successiva al Pleistocene, del periodo Quaternario o Neozoico, risalente a circa 12000 anni fa e adottata come denominazione geologica standard nel 1885[4]. Carattere peculiare dell’Olocene è un significativo incremento sia della temperatura media che del livello del mare; incremento stabilizzatosi intorno agli 8000 anni fa. La prima formulazione pubblica, ancorché ufficiosa, della proposta di Crutzen è legata a un aneddoto biografico, riportato dal giornalista e scrittore tedesco Christian Schwägerl: uno dei più strenui sostenitori della causa antropocenica. Nel corso di un convegno internazionale di geologia svoltosi a Cuernavaca (Messico) nel febbraio del 2000, Crutzen racconta di aver perso la pazienza – esasperato dal sentir ripetere per l’ennesima volta, e con la massima naturalezza, che l’epoca geologica attuale sarebbe ancora l’Olocene – e di aver reagito in maniera poco consona al galateo scientifico: «interruppi il relatore e puntualizzai che non ci trovavamo più nell’Olocene. Dissi che eravamo già nell’Antropocene. La mia osservazione ebbe un grande effetto sugli astanti. Dapprima vi fu silenzio, dopodiché le persone cominciarono a discuterne»[5].
Di lì a qualche mese segue l’atto di nascita ufficiale, coincidente con la pubblicazione di un brevissimo articolo (appena due pagine) sul bollettino dell’International Geosphere–Biosphere Programme (IGBP), che Crutzen redige a quattro mani con il biologo statunitense Eugene Filmore Stoermer[6]. Costui aveva utilizzato il termine “Anthropocene” già negli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso; tuttavia, per sua stessa ammissione, lo aveva fatto soltanto a mo’ di etichetta, senza attribuirgli una particolare valenza. A partire dalla pubblicazione di questo manifesto antropocenico, Crutzen si è dedicato pressoché interamente a: raffinare, precisare e soprattutto promuovere la propria proposta, coadiuvato in questo impegno da diversi colleghi, tra i quali andrà menzionato almeno il climatologo statunitense Will Steffen. Il lavoro di Crutzen contempla anche la ricostruzione del retroterra storico dell’Antropocene: la messa in rilievo di una serie di riflessioni che, grossomodo a cominciare dalla metà del XIX secolo, avevano riconosciuto nell’attività umana un fattore ormai capace di condizionare la situazione complessiva del nostro pianeta. Il primo antefatto antropocenico risale al 1864, anno in cui George Perkins Marsh, filologo e uomo politico statunitense (nonché pioniere del pensiero ecologico), pubblica il suo Man and Nature, or Physical Geography as Modified by Human Action[7]. Tappe ulteriori sono: la definizione di «era antropozoica», coniata nel 1873 dal geologo italiano Antonio Stoppani; la formula «era psicozoica», a opera del geologo russo Vladimir Vernadskij; l’idea di una «noosfera», promossa da Pierre Teilhard de Chardin e Édouard Le Roy a partire da un’intuizione dello stesso Vernadskij[8].
Pur nella sua brevità, il manifesto antropocenico del 2000 elenca già i capisaldi argomentativi dell’idea di Crutzen (la sua convinzione che, di fatto, ci troviamo già all’interno di una nuova epoca geologica), ovvero quei parametri attestanti l’oggettiva escalation della variabile antropica durante gli ultimi tre secoli: il tasso di accrescimento demografico; l’urbanizzazione; lo sfruttamento dei combustili fossili; la cosiddetta «sesta grande estinzione di massa»; il cambiamento climatico; la concentrazione dei gas serra. In particolare, Crutzen rinviene nell’aumento esponenziale – va da sé, di matrice antropogenica – di CO2 nell’atmosfera l’evidenza decisiva atta a legittimare le pretese di questa aspirante nuova epoca geologica[9]. «Le attività umane», scrive, «sono divenute talmente profonde e pervasive da rivaleggiare con le grandi forze della natura, tanto da spingere la Terra verso una terra incognita planetaria»[10].
La verità è che l’immagine della “terra incognita” si presta bene non solo a delineare il futuro concreto del nostro pianeta, ma si mostra un’istantanea parimenti icastica anche in chiave teoretica, visto che l’Antropocene si è presto rivelato, al di là delle stesse intenzioni dei suoi promotori, una costruzione costitutivamente ambigua, esprimente tanto un’epoca quanto, se non soprattutto, un “discorso”. Addirittura una Weltanschauung. L’idea antropocenica risulta infatti un dispositivo epistemicamente instabile, nella misura in cui tradisce una intrinseca tendenza a esondare dal proprio alveo epistemico: quello delle scienze naturali. Ne fa fede, tra l’altro, il fatto che mentre la comunità scientifica appare ancora molto cauta verso le pretese di questa aspirante epoca geologica, sul fronte epistemico opposto (quello delle scienze umane) “Antropocene” è diventato un termine di uso comune. Un vero e proprio – ci si perdoni l’espressione – trend topic del dibattito culturale.
D’altro canto, una tale instabilità epistemica risulta il riflesso di una pari instabilità tassonomica e persino ontologica, con ciò volendo intendere che la difficoltà di collocazione epistemica dell’oggetto “Antropocene” dipende dall’ulteriore e più radicale difficoltà di stabilire “che cos’è”. Tant’è vero che anche laddove si cerchi di interpretarlo esclusivamente quale possibile epoca geologica, esso implica giocoforza il definitivo superamento (nella direzione di una osmosi) tra i fronti “natura” e “cultura”[11]. L’assunto fondativo dell’idea antropocenica – la convinzione che l’azione umana (in senso lato, “la cultura”) sia divenuta la principale forza naturale operante in seno al «sistema Terra»[12] (in senso lato, “la natura”) – si colloca infatti già al di là della classica distinzione tra i due suddetti fronti. Tant’è che per la propria determinazione cronologica in chiave strettamente geologica l’Antropocene fa riferimento non al tempo naturale (come è sempre stato per qualsiasi epoca geologica), bensì a quello storico. Per meglio dire: a un tempo storico impiegato come cronologia (anche) geologica. A un’indistinguibile, osmotica temporalità natural-culturale[13]. Approfondiremo tra poco questo aspetto, affrontando il tema della periodizzazione.
- L’Antropocene: una questione filosofica
In virtù di questa e di molte altre ragioni (che per motivi di brevità non tratteremo in queste pagine), la questione antropocenica trova un referente ideale nella riflessione filosofica, nel senso che quest’ultima si rivela un filtro oltremodo utile, persino necessario, a far emergere quegli inespressi presupposti teorici e ideologici giacenti al fondo delle definizioni generali dell’Antropocene. Con ciò facciamo riferimento a quegli assunti che insinuano elementi valutativi (prescrittivi), celandoli dietro affermazioni all’apparenza neutre (descrittive) in virtù della loro matrice scientifica.
Proponendoci l’obiettivo di impostare una lettura critica dell’Antropocene, siamo peraltro ben consapevoli di ascriverci a un’attività ampiamente frequentata negli ultimi tempi. Tanto frequentata che ormai si fatica a tenere il conto dei tentativi di dissezionare teoreticamente il discorso antropocenico, culminanti quasi sempre nella proposta di una denominazione alternativa. Ne forniamo una rapida, ma senz’altro istruttiva, lista qui di seguito. Si va da: «Homogenocene»[14], «Econocene»[15], «Capitalocene»[16], «Thanatocene», «Thermocene», «Phagocene», «Phronocene», «Agnotocene», «Polemocene»[17], fino a: «Sustainocene», «Cosmocene»[18] «Chthulucene»[19], «Entropocene»[20]. Come tradisce già il titolo del presente contributo, neppure noi verremo meno a questa sorta di obbligo tacito.
Tra i molti contributi vagliati per l’elaborazione della nostra prospettiva teorica ed ermeneutica, abbiamo fatto particolare riferimento alle tesi dello studioso sudafricano Jeremy Baskin, il quale, pur non afferendo al milieu filosofico, ha prodotto – quantomeno a nostro avviso – uno dei contributi più convincenti e stimolanti relativamente alla questione antropocenica interpretata nel suo complesso e nella sua complessità. Nella lettura di Baskin l’Antropocene si caratterizza non tanto come concetto scientifico, quanto come «base ideativa di una particolare visione del mondo», addirittura una «ideologia», ovvero «un paradigma travestito da epoca»[21]. Detto nei termini di Christophe Bonneuil e Jean-Baptiste Fressoz (autori di una esaustiva ricognizione su “l’evento Antropocene”), l’Antropocene si candida autorevolmente a rappresentare il grand récit della nostra epoca[22]. L’interpretazione proposta da Baskin individua quattro implicazioni ideologiche fondamentali, emergenti da un tale paradigma: 1) l’universalizzazione/naturalizzazione di una parte (privilegiata) dell’umanità a scapito di tutte le altre; 2) il reinserimento dell’uomo nella natura solo per poi ri-elevarlo, dall’interno, al di sopra di essa; 3) un uso della «ragione strumentale», sfociante in un’apertura acritica verso la tecnica; 4) la legittimazione di approcci non democratici (tecnocratici) sul piano politico[23].
Dal canto nostro, sulla scorta anche di queste suggestioni, abbiamo maturato la convinzione che la connaturata ambiguità dell’idea antropocenica – la sua costitutiva inclinazione ideologica – dipenda dal fatto che essa esprime, del tutto acriticamente, la constatazione di un’evidenza epocale tutt’altro che pacifica, ovvero la definitiva naturalizzazione della tecnica. In altri termini: a nostro avviso, l’elemento prescrittivo celato tra le pieghe della livrea scientifica indossata da questa aspirante epoca geologica consiste nell’accettazione serena, “naturale” della definitiva metamorfosi della techne in physis.
È il caso di indugiare brevemente su questo snodo centrale della nostra argomentazione. All’interno dell’attuale congiuntura storica, l’azione dell’uomo (“la tecnica”) è venuta assumendo un ruolo così pervasivo che il solo modo per percepirne adeguatamente la (onni)presenza è interpretarla come natura. Come physis. Vale a dire: alla stregua di una totalità. L’epoca del trionfo dello homo faber può essere descritta e compresa soltanto analogamente a un’epoca geologica e dunque nei termini di un tempo naturale, cosmico. Vale a dire: alla stregua di un tempo assoluto, che può riferirsi esclusivamente a se stesso. Tuttavia, osservando con più attenzione, dietro questa metamorfosi si cela un ulteriore presupposto inespresso. La techne può infatti essere pensata come physis solo perché essa ne ha previamente e surrettiziamente preso il posto, sostituendola nel suo significato e nella sua funzione. Ne segue perciò che quella physis, la quale riconduce a sé la techne, risulta in realtà già interamente convertita e tradotta secondo parametri tecnici, artificiali. La metamorfosi della techne in physis va dunque rubricata come un epifenonemo al cospetto del fenomeno principale, consistente nella metamorfosi preliminare della physis in techne, in quel lungo processo di de-cosmizzazione della natura – di «demondificazione del mondo»[24] – caratterizzante l’intera modernità e che nell’epoca denominata Antropocene perverrebbe al proprio compimento definitivo. Sulla scorta di tali premesse, l’Antropocene si accredita, di fatto e sul campo, come l’epoca della techne in quanto kosmos e holon, della tecnica elevatasi al rango di totalità.
Qui e ora lo spettacolo che si offre al nostro sguardo è quello di una «tecno-natura» (Technature)[25], in quanto nella cornice antropocenica la natura risulta: pensata, percepita e fruita in termini integralmente tecnici. Il suo significato di “risorsa a nostra disposizione” diventa una datità non ulteriormente riducibile (un positum) e come tale acquista una valenza ovvia, nel senso di “naturale”. La stessa necessità attuale di “darci una regolata” – prestando ascolto alle istanze ecologiste – appare in ultima istanza subordinata alla preoccupazione di rovinare il magazzino che contiene quelle risorse, di arrivare al punto di non poterle più sfruttare.
Al riguardo, è ancora Baskin a fornirci un’utile sponda ermeneutica, isolando due possibili approcci – sia interpretativi che, soprattutto, operativi – nei confronti dell’Antropocene[26]. Il primo, più radicale, viene definito «prometeico» e si propone di edificare, per mezzo di un sempre più attivo e consapevole intervento dell’uomo, un’epoca nuova e “migliore”. Testimoni di un simile approccio, il giornalista e scrittore britannico Mark Lynas, autore del controverso The God Species, e il geografo statunitense Erle C. Ellis[27]. L’altro approccio, più morbido, viene definito «aidosiano» (con riferimento ad Aidos, la dea greca dell’umiltà e della modestia) e si propone, sempre attraverso l’intervento umano, di ripristinare le condizioni complessive proprie dell’Olocene: l’epoca geologica precedente l’Antropocene. A sostegno di questa strategia “restauratrice” si fa riferimento alle cosiddette «planetary boundaries» (soglie planetarie), proposte nel 2009 dallo scienziato ambientale svedese Johan Rockström e consistenti in nove parametri in grado di attestare obiettivamente la differenza tra l’epoca attuale e l’Olocene, nonché di individuare gli interventi utili a ripristinare eventuali squilibri[28]. Esempi di orientamento aidosiano sarebbero lo stesso Crutzen e il suo sodale Steffen.
Stanti pure le loro differenze interne, Baskin individua una sintonia di fondo dei due approcci in virtù della condivisione di un decisivo presupposto demiurgico e/o post-naturale: il riconoscimento, all’interno dell’attuale congiuntura storica, della ormai inderogabile necessità di un «management planetario attivo»[29] da parte dell’uomo. Dato un simile assunto comune, non stupisce il fatto che all’interno del dibattito antropocenico i due principali effetti della pervasività dell’azione umana – la scarsità di petrolio e il cambiamento climatico – vengano unanimemente reinterpretati alla stregua di altrettante opportunità, ovvero come le «sfide gemelle» a cui sarebbe chiamato lo steward planetario[30]. Il comune principio ispiratore dei due approcci sembra consistere perciò nella persuasione che la modalità essenziale, se non esclusiva, per esercitare la nostra responsabilità di “manager planetari” è agire, intervenire. Vale a dire, che l’unica nostra eventuale colpa consisterebbe nella mancanza di responsabilità, che a sua volta coinciderebbe interamente con l’astensione, con il non intervento.
- Per una cronologia antropocenica
Una prova ulteriormente concreta della presenza, al fondo del discorso antropocenico, di una premessa post-naturale (ossia, di una visione «de-naturata»[31] della natura) è fornita dai tentativi di periodizzarlo. Una questione nient’affatto trascurabile, specie per la riflessione filosofica. Il primo problema in tal senso si pone per la scelta di una data di inizio. Scartata, in quanto troppo radicale, la cosiddetta «early anthropocene hypothesis»[32], che vorrebbe farlo cominciare addirittura con la rivoluzione neolitica (tra 8000 e 5000 anni fa), sono rimaste in campo due proposte. La prima colloca questo inizio nell’avvento della rivoluzione industriale, adottando la data convenzionale del 1800, mentre la seconda lo fa coincidere con la cosiddetta «grande accelerazione» e con la data altamente simbolica del 1945 (l’anno atomico). Intorno alla metà del secolo scorso ha luogo infatti una ulteriore significativa impennata dei principali parametri ecosistemici, rispetto alla discontinuità già determinatasi con l’inizio dell’industrializzazione[33]. La scelta di Crutzen e Steffen ricade sulla prima ipotesi, dalla quale deriva una proposta di periodizzazione scandita in tre fasi: 1) «l’era industriale» (1800 ca.-1945); 2) «la grande accelerazione» (1945 ca.-2015); 3) un ipotetico terzo stadio (2015 ca.-?), nel corso del quale l’essere umano dovrebbe finalmente assumere l’auspicato ruolo di “steward del sistema Terra”.
Gli stessi Crutzen e Steffen individuano anche tre alternative – tre distinti copioni – per interpretare questo ruolo planetario: l’«ordinaria amministrazione», da attuarsi perpetuando l’atteggiamento caratterizzante la grande accelerazione; l’«attenuazione», consistente nel ripristino attivo delle condizioni pre-antropoceniche (oloceniche); le «opzioni geo-ingegneristiche», ossia una serie di azioni, ispirate a un criterio decisamente più interventista, che dovrebbero promuovere lo steward planetario al rango di pilota[34]. Di vero e proprio timoniere, cui spetterebbe di guidare il pianeta verso la già citata terra incognita.
Stante la prospettiva ermeneutica per la quale abbiamo optato, l’aspetto per noi più interessante sta nel fatto che una tale periodizzazione conferma, anche dal punto di vista cronologico, la costitutiva ambiguità dell’idea antropocenica. La quale poggia sul modello di un tempo cosmico (naturale) completamente assorbito da quello umano (tecnico). Questa temporalità del tutto singolare chiarisce ancor più le remore della comunità scientifica ad accettare la candidatura dell’Antropocene quale epoca squisitamente geologica. La sua cornice cronologica implica infatti una totale indistinzione tra tempo naturale e tempo storico poiché ne viene meno la stessa condizione di possibilità, consistente nella differenza cosmologica tra mondo e mondo umano[35]. Nell’ambito della inedita congiuntura che una tale periodizzazione si proporrebbe di ordinare (ovvero la cosa di cui il termine “Antropocene” ambisce a essere il nome), il mondo umano eclissa interamente quello naturale fino a renderlo pressoché impercettibile, ergendosene a parametro e unità di misura. Come afferma lo stesso Crutzen, con una sorta di lapsus che rende bene lo spirito ideologico animante il paradigma antropocenico: con l’avvento di questa nuova epoca, «la natura siamo noi»[36]. Nostro, interamente nostro il dovere di prendersi cura (take care), ossia di gestire e amministrare (manage) l’organismo planetario del quale siamo ormai diventati i primi responsabili, visto che oggi «la Terra [è] nelle nostre mani»[37] ovvero che «siamo noi a decidere che cosa è e che cosa sarà la natura»[38].
- Chi è l’Antropocene?
Fatto salvo quanto argomentato finora, la nostra dissezione critica del discorso antropocenico non può arrestarsi a questo livello di analisi, necessitando invece di esplicitarne almeno un ulteriore, umbratile presupposto. Il seguente. La fusione osmotica, il sincretismo tra techne e physis – quella tecno-natura che a nostro avviso esprime il corredo identitario di questa aspirante nuova epoca – può realizzarsi solo a partire da una fondamentale condizione di possibilità, consistente nell’equazione ontologica tra “essere” ed “essere fattibile”. Fra sein e machbar sein. L’Antropocene, l’epoca della tecnica totalizzata (della techne che, rimpiazzando la physis, si fa kosmos e holon), è anzitutto ed essenzialmente l’epoca in cui “essere” significa “essere materia prima”, il tempo nel quale la possibilitas diventa mera potestas e la Möglichkeit si rattrappisce in Macht. Il possibile (das Mögliche) si identifica interamente con il fattibile (das Machbare) e in questa veste si fa cogenza e destino. Come recita la cosiddetta “legge di Gabor” nella formulazione offertane da Günther Anders: «ciò che si può fare (das Gekonnte), si deve fare (das Gesollte)»[39]. Ne segue che «essere materia prima è criterium existendi»[40].
La premessa di base di questo passaggio argomentativo può essere compendiata nella formula: “tutto ciò che è, è fattibile”. O meglio: tutto ciò che è, è solo nella misura in cui è fattibile. Dove “fattibile” vale “provocabile” (herausforderlich), nella sua accezione heideggeriana[41]. La fattibilità/provocabilità (Machbarkeit/Herausfordbarkeit) diventa modus essendi universale. Volendone fornire una caratterizzazione ulteriormente diretta: la determinazione ontologica di ciò che viene interamente risolto nella propria fattibilità/provocabilità corrisponde a ciò che Heidegger definisce «Bestand» (fondo)[42]. Com’è noto, nella lettura heideggeriana il fondo equivale a quella determinazione ontologica di un ente che lo funzionalizza integralmente sottraendogli qualsiasi caratterizzazione sostanziale, qualsiasi possibile “essere per sé”. L’ente in quanto fondo equivale con ciò a «das Gegenstandlose»: un «non più neppure oggetto»[43].
Ebbene, in forza di questo assunto risulterebbe improprio sostenere – come vorrebbero i suoi apologeti più oltranzisti – che l’Antropocene, in quanto epoca del trionfo della tecnica, corrisponda alla Human Epoch par excellence[44]. Paradossalmente, infatti, la vera cifra antropologica dell’Antropocene, il volto autentico dello steward del sistema Terra non è quello dello homo faber, soggetto della techne, ma dello homo materia, che di essa diventa oggetto. Quanto intendiamo affermare è che alla base dell’antropocentrismo antropocenico – ciò che ne sancisce la sostanziale diversità rispetto alla versione tradizionale dell’antropocentrismo – sta l’antropodecentrismo di una servitù volontaria nei confronti della tecnica (la quale proprio in tal modo perviene al rango di soggettività storica), ovvero il paradosso antropologico della metamorfosi dello homo faber in homo materia. Günther Anders – nel quale è lecito rinvenire un “dissezionatore” ante litteram del discorso antropocenico – può aiutarci a chiarire questo passaggio[45]. L’assolutizzazione della potenza in fattibilità e “potere di fare” (il rattrappirsi della Möglichkeit in Macht e infine in Machbarkeit), il trionfo della tecnica in quanto forza planetaria fa dello homo faber uno homo creator, ovvero colui che non si limita più a riprodurre la natura. Lo homo creator rappresenta il correlato antropico generato dal passaggio della techne da mimesis a poiesis, ovvero dalla situazione nella quale la techne si dimostra in grado letteralmente di “creare”, vale a dire: di “produrre physis”. La condizione dello homo creator corrisponde a quella in cui lo homo faber assolutizza il proprio diritto/dovere di fare, estendendolo alla totalità di ciò che è, senza alcuna eccezione. Per diventare creatore, egli deve trasformare ogni cosa in un utilizzabile/provocabile. In una materia prima. In un Bestand. Ogni cosa (e qui si innesca il cortocircuito), dunque anche se stesso. Di conseguenza, l’esito paradossale ma del tutto coerente determinato dalla metamorfosi antropologica che fa dello homo faber uno homo creator è la sua contemporanea e complementare trasformazione in homo materia. In un Bestand-Mensch, ovvero in un uomo-fondo. Per diventare pienamente “soggetto” (steward, manager, engineer) della realtà attuale, egli deve rendersi oggetto della propria stessa azione. Per esercitare il proprio dovere di tutela assoluta nei confronti del sistema planetario, l’essere umano deve farsi strumento di quello strumento – la tecnica – attraverso il quale è in grado di dare e ridare incessantemente forma al mondo. In altri termini: egli deve reificarsi, dis-umanizzarsi; deve farsi oggetto tra oggetti, fondo tra fondi, assoggettandosi alla propria stessa capacità di fare (Machbarkeit), che in tal modo si eleva a parametro universale e a fenomeno epocale. È in questa forma, letteralmente ipostatizzata, che la tecnica può diventare il nuovo «soggetto della storia»[46] e della natura stessa.
- Il Tecnocene
Nell’epoca della tecnica totalizzata neppure all’anthropos è consentito sottrarsi alla prescrizione ontologica della fattibilità/provocabilità. L’ideologia postumanista e l’imperativo dello enhancement (il “potenziamento” umano a oltranza) – due tasselli che si inseriscono in maniera perfetta nel mosaico del paradigma antropocenico – ne offrono una icastica rappresentazione già a livello ontico, quotidiano. Per usare ancora l’efficace lessico andersiano: la coazione allo enhancement rappresenta la controparte di una «vergogna prometeica» (quella vergogna «che si prova di fronte all’‘umiliante’ altezza di qualità degli oggetti fatti da noi stessi»[47]), generata dal cosiddetto «dislivello prometeico», ovvero dalla «incapacità della nostra anima di rimanere “up to date” con la nostra produzione»[48]. Si tratta di una vergogna che la provocazione tecnica fa crescere fino a diventare colpa prometeica; di una cattiva disposizione che infine si fa cattiva coscienza nei confronti della propria umanità, percepita ormai soltanto più come obsolescenza, «antiquatezza» (Antiquiertheit).
Ininterrottamente provocato da pretese di prestazione rispetto alle quali si percepisce costantemente inadeguato, l’essere umano vive in modo colpevole la propria naturale refrattarietà alla mobilitazione totale. Da questa insuperabile frustrazione scaturisce il conseguente imperativo a mettersi interamente a disposizione di un mondo, frattanto divenuto «overmanned»[49]: “a dismisura d’uomo”. Alligna qui l’auto-obbligazione a farci homo materia, affinché la tecnica finalmente ci dis-umanizzi: ci liberi, cioè, dalla condanna insopportabile di essere “ancora semplicemente umani”. Nel suo significato essenziale, l’antiquatezza in quanto cifra antropologica della contemporaneità (dell’età antropocenica) si rivela così «l’attitudine negativa dell’uomo nei confronti del suo essere-umano». La sua voluptas di diventare, finalmente, «sicut machinae»[50].
Sulla scorta delle considerazioni sin qui elaborate, l’Antropocene emerge come l’epoca della tecnica soggetto della storia e della stessa natura (per quanto, giova ribadirlo, di una natura post-naturale in quanto de-naturata). D’altro canto, la tecnica può assurgere a una tale condizione solo attraverso una sostanziale modificazione della conditio humana. In altri termini: l’esito coerentemente paradossale dell’epoca integralmente umana – quella in cui l’uomo si fa davvero misura di tutte le cose, parametrandosi soltanto su se stesso, ossia sulla propria capacità di fare – corrisponde a un’alterazione profonda di qualsiasi possibile perimetro antropico. Intendendo con questa espressione quell’orizzonte fondativo minimo (estraneo, cioè, a qualsiasi tentazione di essenzialismo antropologico), all’interno del quale l’essere umano è in grado di riconoscersi come tale[51]. Ne segue che il “trascedentale antropocenico” – la fondamentale precondizione, teoretica e ideologica, di questa nuova epoca – sta nella eclissi dell’anthropos. Nella sua proletarizzazione[52], nel senso di una diminutio ontologica.
Il fatto che la centralità della tecnica, il suo imporsi nella veste di attuale soggettività epocale, non possa darsi se non al prezzo della dis-umanizzazione dell’uomo è la ragione per la quale proponiamo, in conclusione, di definire questa aspirante nuova epoca (in quanto discorso già elaborato e paradigma già implementato) non Antropo-cene, bensì Tecno-cene.
