John Grech
(b. 1973, Valletta) is a Maltese artist whose early life was shaped by the stories of his grandmother, a Pied-Noire from Algiers, whose vivid recollections of colonial life and civil war left a lasting impression. Drawn to sketching, painting, and sculpture from an early age, he later apprenticed for over a decade in the studio of Ray Pitre, one of Malta’s leading artists. In his mid-thirties, Grech left the island to travel extensively, particularly through East Asia, before settling for eight years in Prague. During that time, his work began to engage more deliberately with art history, incorporating layered references and iconographic motifs. He is now based in Malta.
