Etica applicata o Etiche applicate? Pluralismo disciplinare e centralità della scienza
Il rapido sviluppo tecno-scientifico del XX e XXI secolo da un lato ha generato un gap tra le capacità tecniche di Sapiens e la sua psicologia morale. Dall’altro, ha offerto alla nostra specie inedite possibilità di ibridazione con il mondo esterno. L’esigenza di una riflessione strutturata intorno agli aspetti etico-filosofici connessi ai nuovi scenari ha costituito il volano per la trasformazione dell’Etica. Toulmin in un paper del 1982 How medicine saved the life of Ethics sottolineò il ruolo chiave che la medicina ebbe nel dare nuova vita all’etica e impulso alla nascita della Bioetica, una delle più note forme di etica applicata.
Di fatto, volendo riprendere l’espressione di Toulmin, e in qualche modo rilanciarla, non solo la medicina, ma le scienze del bìos nel loro complesso, l’ingegneria nelle sue varie articolazioni, l’informatica fino ad arrivare ai settori di punta dell’intelligenza artificiale e della biologia sintetica hanno favorito l’emergere di nuovi ambiti di riflessione e la moltiplicazione delle forme di etica applicata.
In tale contesto, ciascuna forma, in qualche modo, rivendica una propria autonomia, nei termini della elaborazione di specifici strumenti di analisi, peculiari problemi e specifiche skills che uno studioso, all’interno di quell’ambito, deve esibire.
Nonostante ciò, emerge con chiarezza anche la necessità di non trascurare il comun denominatore tra i vari ambiti e gli elementi di raccordo che pur emergono nelle differenze e al di là di esse.
Di fronte a questi scenari, sono due i temi che il Dossier intende mettere a fuoco.
1) provare a rispondere alla domanda se l’autonomia disciplinare e il pluralismo in relazione all’etica applicata siano l’ideale regolativo al quale attenerci o piuttosto (almeno in alcuni casi) un ostacolo che ci impedisce di trovare un inquadramento più generale per settori della riflessione etica che spesso presentano punti di contatto e problematiche interconnesse che sarebbe più efficace affrontare superando l’ottica di iperspecializzazione che oggi sembra essere il destino ultimo (anche) delle discipline filosofiche;
2) a partire dalla constatazione che nelle etiche applicate l’oggetto di indagine non può essere un mero Gegenstand (qualcosa che sta di fronte) ma parte attiva del processo di riflessione, ulteriore questione da esaminare sarà: quale spazio in un’etica della scienza deve rivestire il sapere scientifico di riferimento, per evitare di farne il semplice oggetto di una riflessione esteriore?

Procedura: Inviare all’indirizzo scienzaefilosofia@gmail.com, entro il 31 marzo 2023, un abstract di max 5000 battute comprendente il titolo della proposta di saggio e una descrizione dell’iter argomentativo. Le proposte saranno valutate dai curatori e dal comitato di lettori della rivista. Gli autori riceveranno comunicazione dell’esito della selezione, unitamente all’indicazione della nuova deadline per l’invio dei contributi (30 giugno 2023). Infine, i contributi verranno sottoposti a doppia blind review e gli autori riceveranno, al termine della procedura, comunicazione circa l’esito della valutazione.
Lingue accettate: Italiano, inglese, francese, tedesco e spagnolo.
È possibile inoltre – con le stesse modalità – proporre articoli a tema libero relativi alle seguenti sezioni della rivista:
Storia Esposizione e ricostruzione di questioni di storia della scienza e di storia di filosofia della scienza con intenzione sostanzialmente divulgativa;
Antropologie Temi e incroci tra scienze, antropologia filosofica e antropologia culturale;
Etiche Riflessioni su temi di “attualità” bioetica;
Linguaggi Questioni di epistemologia;
Alterazioni Dalla biologia evoluzionistica alla cibernetica, temi non direttamente “antropocentrati”;
Comunicazione La comunicazione della scienza come problema filosofico, non meramente storico o sociologico. In altri termini: quanto la comunicazione della scienza ha trasformato la scienza e la sua percezione?
Arte Intersezioni tra scienze e mondo dell’arte;
Recensioni&Reports Le recensioni saranno: tematiche, cioè relative al dossier scelto e quindi comprensive di testi anche non recentissimi purché attinenti e importanti; di attualità, cioè relative a testi recenti. Reports di convegni e congressi.

Applied ethics as singular or plural? Disciplinary pluralism and the centrality of science
The accelerated scientific and technological advancements of the 20th and 21st centuries have, on the one hand, created a gap between Sapiens’ technical abilities and its moral psychology. On the other, it has offered our species unprecedented possibilities for hybridisation with the world outside. The need for a well-structured reflection on the ethical-philosophical aspects of the new scenarios was the driving force behind the transformation of Ethics. Toulmin, in a 1982 paper How medicine saved the life of Ethics, emphasised the key role that medicine played in giving new life to ethics and stimulating the birth of Bioethics, a kind of Applied Ethics at the center of a vast debate.
In fact, to take up Toulmin’s expression and, in some ways, revive it, not only medicine, but the sciences of the biosciences as a whole, engineering in its various forms, information technology right up to the leading sectors of artificial intelligence and synthetic biology have fostered the emergence of new areas of reflection and the multiplication of applied ethics.
Each area of applied ethics somehow claims its own autonomy, in terms of the elaboration of specific analytical tools, distinctive problems and specific skills that a scholar within that area should exhibit.
Nonetheless, it is also clear that the common denominator between the various fields and the connecting elements that emerge in the differences and beyond them should not be overlooked.
Faced with these scenarios, there are two main themes that the present Issue intends to focus on.
1) To try to answer the question of whether disciplinary autonomy and pluralism in relation to Applied Ethics are the regulatory ideal to which we should adhere or rather (at least in some cases) an obstacle that prevents us from finding a more general framework for sectors of ethical reflection that often present points of contact and interconnected problems that it would be more effective to address by overcoming the hyper-specialisation that today seems to be the ultimate destiny (even) of the philosophical disciplines;
2) starting from the observation that in applied ethics the object of enquiry cannot be a mere Gegenstand (something that is in front of) but an active part of the process of reflection, a further question to be examined will be: what space in an ethics of science must scientific knowledge of reference occupy, in order to avoid making it the mere object of an external reflection?

How to apply: Send an abstract (max 5,000 characters) to the address scienzaefilosofia@gmail.com within the fixed deadline (March 31, 2023). The title of one’s proposal and a brief presentation of the argumentative strategies adopted should be included in the abstract. The proposals will be evaluated by the Advisory board and the readers’ committee of the Journal. The result of the selection will be communicated to the authors together with the new fixed deadline (June 30, 2023) . The accepted proposals will undergo a double blind review process. Eventually, the result will be communicated to the authors.
Accepted Languages: Italian, English, French, German and Spanish.
The same procedure can be upheld to propose papers dealing with the following sections of the Journal:
History Reconstruction and analysis of issues about history of science and history of philosophy of science, with a view to scientific divulgation;
Anthropologies Intertwined issues between scientific fields, philosophical anthropology and cultural anthropology;
Ethics Reflections about current bioethical issues;
Languages Epistemological issues;
Alterations From evolutionary biology to cybernetics, problematic issues not directly connected with “Anthropos”;
Communication Science communication as a philosophical problem, not as a solely historical or sociological one. In other words: how much science communication has transformed science itself and its social perception?
Art Intertwining between scientific fields and the art world;
Book_Reviews&Reports Book reviews will be thematic, i.e. dealing with the main topic focused in the Issue. Therefore, they do not necessarily need to be recent publications, as long as they are relevant in the scientific world. Anyhow, books reviewed can also be recent releases as long as they discuss questions of science, philosophy, anthropology and so on. Reports of conferences and meetings.
Papers will be published in the next Issue or in the following Issues of S&F_
